Parc Cynog Wind Farm Extension
Proposal
An additional 6 wind turbines will be added to the 5 existing turbines of Parc Cynog Wind Farm. The new turbines will be located on Castle Lloyd, Colston, Parc Cynog and Westmead Farms in southwest Carmarthenshire to the north of Pendine and Llanmiloe.
Key Points
- An additional 7.8MW of Installed Capacity will be added to the 3.6MW already operational
- The new turbines will have a maximum tip height of 80 metres, compared to 69 metres for the existing turbines
- The output from the 6 new turbines will be more than double the output from the existing 5 turbines
- The additional turbines are expected to produce clean electricity for the equivalent of 4,380 homes*
- Trees and terrain will limit the view of the wind farm from nearby villages
- Nuon has proposed a community fund to which the wind farm will contribute £15,600 per annum over the life of the project.
*Based on an average household consumption of 4700kWh [BWEA]
Background
In May 2005 we held a 2 day public exhibition of the plans Nuon have for the site as a wind farm. An open day was held at the existing wind farm on Saturday 27th August 2005, which was attended by some 250 people. The layout being submitted for planning is largely in the form presented at the exhibition and open day, the only difference being small (up to 50m) changes to three of the turbine positions. There was a strong level of support for the project. Nuon has spent the following 9 months continuing individual consultation and preparing the final results from the various studies that have been undertaken. The proposal was submitted for planning in February 2006.
On 19th July 2007 Carmarthenshire County Council Planning Committee approved plans to extend the Parc Cynog wind farm on the hillside above Pendine. The committee voted with 16 votes for and two against, Nuon Renewables is delighted with the decision. Thanks to the Councillors and officers of the County Council we can now look beyond the planning process and focus on installing the new turbines at the earliest opportunity and in time to contribute to the 2010 Welsh clean energy target Nuon is now planning the next stage of procurement and construction and we will be taking great care to minimise any inconvenience for local people during construction of the extension and we will be keeping the local community closely informed.
