Nant Bach
Proposal
13 wind turbines and associated ancillary development located approximately 1.2km south of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr and 3km south east of Cerrigydrudion in the County Borough of Conwy.
Key Points
- Installed Capacity is up to 32.5MW
- Each turbine will have a maximum tip height of 100 metres
- The project is expected to produce clean electricity for over 18,100 homes over a third of all homes within the Conwy County Borough Council area*
- Nuon has proposed a community fund to which the wind farm would contribute at least £60,000 per annum over the life of the project. We would hope that one of the aims of the community fund would be to use these green revenues to provide green funds for green projects within the local communities
- Trees and terrain will limit the view of the wind farm from nearby villages
- Five local farming families have made available land for the scheme
- The Nant Bach wind farm, if granted planning permission, will contribute almost 25% of the TAN 8 Strategic Search Area A’s indicative 2010 renewable energy capacity target.
- The Nant Bach proposal is capable of contributing to the national of 10% renewable energy generation by 2010.
*Based on an average household consumption of 4700kWh [BWEA]
Background
A full application was submitted to Conwy County Borough Council in September 2006. Unfortunately on 14th November 2007 the planning application for Nant Bach was refused by Conwy Council.
Over thirty local farmers and residents attended Conwy Council Planning meeting to highlight the local farming and community benefits of the Nant Bach wind farm proposal. There was also a small lobby of people opposed to the use of rural landscape for wind energy.
Nuon Renewables had agreed to accept some modifications to the proposal to resolve several site issues raised by the Council Officers but a chaotic meeting narrowly failed to approve the planning application following several confused votes.
A Nuon spokesman said; "This was not a good advert for the planning process and the outcome is unsatisfactory for all concerned. Nuon are carefully reviewing the situation and will decide on the best way forward fairly shortly."
