The Proposal
The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has set renewable energy production targets for Wales of 4 Terrawatt-hours (Twh) per annum by 2010 and 7 Twh by 2020. To supplement these targets WAG published Technical Advice Note 8: Planning for Renewable Energy (TAN 8) and a Ministerial Interim Planning Policy Statement (MIPPS) regarding renewable energy in 2005. These documents provide wind farm developers, local planning authorities and consultees with guidance on the development of renewable energy particularly onshore wind power. TAN 8 identifies seven Strategic Search Areas (SSA's) in Wales that WAG consider suitable for onshore wind developments above 25MW. Rhyd Ddu is situated wholly within SSA B and has a target capacity of 290MW.
